Working in China

If you’re studying at the University of Manchester and are considering returning to China after your course, this page outlines key recruitment timelines, in-demand sectors, and practical tips to help you prepare for your future career.

Graduate recruitment timelines in China

Graduate recruitment in China typically follows two main cycles:

  • Autumn (September–December): Most graduate roles are advertised and filled during this period. Some companies are starting earlier (August or earlier), mainly tech companies.
  • Spring (March–April): A smaller wave of recruitment, often for roles that had not filled in autumn.
  • Onboarding: Usually takes place between summer and September of the graduation year.

Where to look for jobs

The above platforms are suitable to identify internships, graduate level positions and experienced hire positions.

Suitable for internships and graduate level positions.

Important note for Master’s (PGT) students: Chinese employers often require a degree certificate to sign a formal employment contract. Since UK PGT degrees are often awarded later in winter instead, a few workarounds can be explored:

  • Start applying one year later, from the year of graduation (the September after dissertation submission), especially for nationally owned companies (Energy/Utilities, Transport etc.)
  • Starting on an internship contract until your degree is awarded
  • Using your Bachelor’s degree to begin full-time work (may affect salary)
  • Delaying onboarding with employers who are flexible

Using social media for your job search

WeChat is another major platform that can be used to access job vacancies in China, as well as networking with recruiters and other professionals:

  • Many companies regularly post job openings, internship opportunities, and campus recruitment events through their official WeChat accounts (公众号).
  • After attending online or in-person employer events, students are often invited to join WeChat group chats (微信群) where recruitment processes, job details, and interview tips are shared—sometimes even directly by recruiters.
  • When appropriate, WeChat can also be used to connect with HR professionals or alumni to learn more about specific roles or industries.
  • Following relevant WeChat accounts can help you stay informed about industry trends and job opportunities.

RED/Xiaohongshu is also increasingly used by graduates to explore job search experiences and build informal networks:

  • Many users share their experience of campus recruitment, interview tips, and potentially CV templates. You can search using keywords like “campus recruitment experience,” “interview tips,” or “CV advice,” along with company or sector keywords.
  • You can engage with other graduates through comments, direct messages, or follows to request a 'coffee chat'-style brief chat or informal advice. This is a beginner-friendly way to build your network.
  • Particularly useful for those interested in marketing and design roles, or working with start-ups.
  • Be mindful of content credibility—some posts may be promotional or sponsored content.

Understanding what employers are looking for

Across global job markets, either it’s in China, the UK, or other countries, employers consistently value candidates who are a good fit with the role they are recruiting for, and who demonstrate strong commercial awareness. Therefore, we recommend thorough research into the companies you’d like to work with, and the specific job responsibilities of the roles you are interested in. This might include reading the company’s official website, social media posts, and other relevant industry insights to better understand what the company is looking for.

Based on our research (including insights from the McKinsey Global Skills Report, as well as conversations with employers), Chinese employers particularly value the following strengths from UK returnees:

  • Critical thinking and synthesising from interdisciplinary knowledge: this allows you to see issues from multiple perspectives and come up with innovative solutions, especially relevant in complex projects or specialised roles. The UK course structure and assessment place heavy emphasis on cultivating this skill among our students.
  • English proficiency and cross-cultural communication: highly valued in roles working with international markets, or companies with a “going global” business strategy.
  • Resilience and problem solving: can be demonstrated through the experience of studying and living abroad independently.

Additional skills that can further enhance employability include:

  • Familiarity with Chinese AI tools (e.g. Kimi, Doubao etc.)
  • Video CVs and short-form content creation: increasingly popular in marketing, social media, and creative industries as a way to showcase personal branding.
