Requesting adjustments for Careers
As an Inclusion First Careers Service we encourage students and graduates to consider what will support them when they participate in activities we offer for example, attending workshops, careers fairs, employer events, appointments. All activities are booked through CareerConnect, and when booking you will have the opportunity to request your adjustments.
Below is information that will support you when accessing Careers Service activities and some examples of adjustments you could request. Please note, if the adjustment you want is not listed, provide further details when you book on CareerConnect.
Information that will support you when accessing Careers Service activities
- What will my careers appointment be like? Watch our YouTube video to understand how our online and in-person appointments work
- How will a careers appointment help me and what can I do before my appointment? There is information on our website that will help you understand what to do before your appointment and how the appointment might help you.
- What facilities are in the building I am going to? Use the University of Manchester’s interactive map to learn more about the facilities in/near the building you are using.
- I am attending an event/workshop, where is the room and what will it be like? Find the building and room on the list to learn more about what it looks like and use the AccessAble guide for more information about accessibility.
- You will receive an email reminder reminder about the appointment/event you have booked on to 1 day before it
- If you would like to learn more about the Careers Advisor or Careers Consultant your careers appointment is with, you can search for them on LinkedIn
For the adjustments listed below, the Careers Service will aim to action them within 3 working days of receiving your adjustment request
- I would like the advisor to verbally summarise at regular intervals during my careers appointment to help me process the information
- During my appointment/the event I may need to move around
- I will bring a fidget device or self-regulation tool(s) to my appointment/event
- Please use clear, direct, unambiguous communication
- Avoid using jargon or explain what technical terminology and abbreviations mean when used
- I want to bring a support worker/adult with me
- I will be bringing my British Sign Language interpreter with me
- I want to access live closed captions - (this will only be available for online or hybrid events)
For the adjustments listed below, the Careers Service will aim to action them within 7 - 10 working days of receiving your adjustment request
- I want to change the location of my appointment
- I will be bringing my assistance dog to my appointment/the careers event I have signed up to
- I require additional time during the event/appointment to process the information presented
- I would like to change the time of my careers appointment
- I require support with action planning and creating a to do list
- I would like the resources being used during the appointment/event in a larger font
CV and Application Review appointments are bookable 1 working day in advance of the appointment. If you would like to request adjustments for this appointment type, please note it will not be possible to do this with short notice, however our team will do our best to support you.
