Zejun (Eileen)

Engagement and Communications Intern (Flexible Learning Programme) at The University of Manchester

My name is Zejun (Eileen), and I work as an Engagement & Communications Intern in the Directorate of Communications, Marketing and Student Recruitment.

Give a quick snapshot of your role.

In my role, I sit within the communications team for the Flexible Learning Programme, which is a major strategic programme at the University of Manchester. My responsibilities include editing the programme’s StaffNet pages, organising engagement events, creating social media videos, preparing materials for workshops, and collecting & analysing survey and feedback data. It has been a rewarding experience, and so far, I have successfully facilitated three events and six workshops, in addition to editing three videos and more than 15 web pages.

How have you benefitted from your MGT?

I have gained diverse transferable skills through various tasks. I enjoy that my daily work is not repetitive, as it allows me to learn from different assignments and step out of my comfort zone. My managers have given me the autonomy to experiment with new techniques and approaches, and I have been able to improve my organisational skills as well as take initiative in problem-solving.

Even though it has sometimes been challenging, I have always been able to make use of the resources and online platforms offered by the university to overcome any difficulties.

My communication and interpersonal skills have also significantly improved through my MGT role. As a junior professional, I have had the opportunity to learn from role models around me, which has helped me build relationships with stakeholders and colleagues at different levels. Facilitating numerous engagement events has also enhanced my teamwork skills, allowing me to collaborate with colleagues across various departments, and build my confidence.

To better know about my strengths. I keep a working diary, which I use to record my proudest achievements and areas I need to improve. This helps me better realise and utilise my strengths as well as avoid repeating mistakes.

Why would you recommend MGT?

As well as the great experience you will gain (as mentioned above), MGT roles offer access to so many fantastic resources provided by the university, which can help you prepare for a successful career.

Throughout my time at the university, I have taken part in numerous training programmes to enhance my skill set. Specifically, I have actively expanded my knowledge in marketing, project management, and business data analysis through training courses, and gained certificates in SQL, Power BI, and Project Management through LinkedIn Learning – which have given me a broad range of skills I could take into a number of careers.
