Jack

Information and Guidance Support Assistant, Careers Service

My role is based in the Faculty of Science and Engineering helping support the Foundation studies team. I graduated in July 2025 with a degree in Modern History with Economics, and started applying for graduate roles that summer.

Give a quick snapshot of your role.

As a graduate intern for Foundation Studies, my role consists of various responsibilities. From supporting students who attend the student hub with queries, to data entry and creating the Foundation newsletter. Because the Foundation team is slightly smaller than other areas of the university, I’m encouraged to contribute to all elements of the student experience and support systems we offer foundation students studying in FSE.

Why did you choose MGT?

There’s so much I have learnt and I am still learning. From attending networking events, using new data management systems or harnessing functions in excel I haven’t used since A-levels, as well as creating the newsletter, there are plenty of skills that I have picked up in the first few months in the role. My role has also given me a fresh perspective and appreciation on how much work and effort goes on behind the scenes that as a student I did not comprehend. There is a lot more going on at the university than lectures and seminars.

How have you benefitted from your MGT?

I would recommend MGT because it is a great opportunity to gain some experience in an office setting within a highly regarded workplace. Also, everyone I have worked with either networking or as part of daily tasks/meetings has been so encouraging and supportive throughout my role so far. UoM is an enjoyable place to work and encourages you to progress your skillset in your early career.

What are your plans for the future?

I have not got any future plans as of yet, that was part of the reason I applied for the MGT scheme. I would like to progress into a management consultancy career at some point, but I am enjoying working at the university and I love Manchester as a city, so hopefully I can progress into another role when I have completed my MGT internship.
