Bashirunnisa
Student Wellbeing Assistant at The University of Manchester
I have completed my MSc in Biomaterials at the University of Manchester, graduating with distinction and achieving the highest rank in my cohort. I currently work within the School of Biological Sciences as a Teaching, Learning and Student Experience (Information, Advice and Guidance) Intern.
Give a quick snapshot of your role
My role focuses on enhancing the student experience through both direct support and operational coordination. I act as a first point of contact at the Student Support Hub, assisting students with academic and administrative queries while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
In parallel, I contribute to organising student-facing events such as welcome activities and careers sessions, develop digital content including newsletters and social media posts, and support employability initiatives by advising students on CVs and applications. I also assist with data management and internal processes, helping to ensure services are delivered efficiently and inclusively across the School.
What have you learnt during your MGT?
This experience has strengthened my understanding of student-centred service delivery within higher education. I have developed strong communication skills, particularly in tailoring information and guidance to diverse student needs with sensitivity and professionalism.
I have also gained valuable insight into the operational aspects of the University, including data management and cross-team collaboration. Importantly, the role has deepened my awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion in practice, particularly in supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds.
Overall, it has enhanced my ability to manage multiple responsibilities, work proactively, and contribute effectively within a professional team environment.
Why would you recommend MGT?
I would strongly recommend this internship as it offers a well-rounded introduction to professional services within a leading research university. It provides an excellent opportunity to develop both technical and interpersonal skills while making a meaningful contribution to the student community.
What makes this experience particularly valuable is the balance between responsibility and support. The exposure to student support, employability, and university operations enables significant personal and professional development.
For anyone interested in education, student engagement, or administrative leadership, it is an excellent platform to build confidence, competence, and a strong professional foundation.
What are your future plans?
I plan to pursue a PhD in advanced functional materials, focusing on the development of nanomaterials to address global challenges. Alongside my research ambitions, I aim to remain actively engaged in higher education through teaching and student support, recognising the importance of mentorship and inclusive education in shaping future researchers.
