The role of a teacher is to create engaging lessons that enable students to learn and develop a deep understanding of the national curriculum or relevant subject area. They plan and deliver lessons across the full age and ability range, support, assess and monitor students' progress and prepare them for examinations and assessments. Teachers keep up to date with their subject knowledge and national developments in the curriculum plus teaching and learning practices, and regularly devise new learning resources.
Teachers manage classroom behaviour, provide pastoral support for their students and act as a listening ear during difficult times in their lives. They have a duty of care to safeguard and protect student welfare and to communicate progress and/or concerns with parents and carers. A teacher is in a unique position to be a role model for students, encouraging and facilitating them to achieve their aspirations, and to foster a positive learning environment.
Having or gaining relevant experience in a classroom, mentoring or tutoring setting is generally required for making teaching applications; check the individual providers’ entry requirements for further information. Most training providers and schools will require a candidate to teach a sample lesson when either applying for a course or a teaching post, so it is important to be prepared for this, and to be ready to discuss a wide range of educational topical areas.
