What is a Micro Internship?

Real clients. Real projects. Real outcomes. A Micro Internship is a virtual work-based learning programme delivered in partnership with Practera, designed to help you gain valuable work experience in a flexible format.

Working in a small team of University of Manchester students, you will act as a consultant for a real organisation, helping them tackle a current business challenge or priority project. Previous project themes have included:

  • Growth Strategy - Undertake a consulting project to help your client grow.
  • Digital Marketing - Analyse and enhance your client’s digital presence.
  • AI Strategy - Research AI innovation tends, develop a prototype concept to leverage gen AI.
  • Sustainable Impact - Help an organisation with a project aligned to the UN SDG’s.
  • International Business - Research an international market for your client.
  • Megatrends - Research the megatrends shaping your clients future.

You will indicate your preferred project area when you apply.

Throughout the programme, you will collaborate with your team, engage directly with the client, and develop practical recommendations and solutions. Micro Internships provide an excellent opportunity to gain real-world experience, develop employability skills and strengthen your CV without the time commitment of a traditional internship.

How does it work?

  1. Attend the Orientation Session
    Meet your project team, receive your project brief, and learn about the programme structure and requirements from the Practera team.

  2. Attend the Project Briefing Session
    Meet with your Industry Client and gain an understanding of the organisation, project expectations and deliverables.

  3. Work on the Project Brief
    Collaborate with your team over the programme to research, analyse, and develop recommendations for your industry client.

  4. Submit a Draft Report
    Midway through the programme, you will submit a draft report and receive feedback to help strengthen your final recommendations. You will also complete the Team 360 feedback activity.

  5. Submit Your Final Deliverables
    Submit your final report to your Industry Client and at the end of the programme, reflect on your professional development and experience.
