What work experience did you do?

I took part in a one week prosthodontics summer school in Indonesia, known as the STOVIT x PSC summer school.

What was it that inspired you to look for work experience?

I wanted to make the most of my time in university and gain global experience whilst also boosting my CV and increasing my experience in the dental industry.

Why did you choose to do work experience in this area?

I study dentistry and so I wanted to do experience relevant to my role to improve my skills.

Give a brief snapshot of your role:

  • Shadow Indonesian dental students in carrying out dental procedures
  • Take part in practical workshops including specialties such as orthodontics, prosthodontics and periodontology
  • Attend lectures relevant to dentistry

How did the Bursary award support you in gaining experience?

The flights to Indonesia were very expensive and the bursary helped cover the cost of most of the flights which really helped in relieving financial stress.

What were the most enjoyable aspects of your role?

Shadowing other dental students because it was interesting to see how others work with dentistry and if they do it differently compared to the UK.

What were the challenges?

I have never looked at dentistry globally and so I think adapting to a new environment and looking at dentistry from different perspectives since I am used to doing things differently.

Did you have any worries or concerns before your work experience and if so how were they dealt with and overcome?

I was not worried or concerned, I was very looking forward to this experiences.

What specific or transferable skills did you develop through the work experience?

I learnt how to communicate with people who do not have English as their first language and realised it comes with speaking slowly and using your hands more.

Did the work experience give you any insights and have these influenced your career pathway?

Yes it increased my passion for dentistry and made me affirm that this is what I want to do in the future.

Do you have any words of wisdom for future students looking to gain work experience?

Be very proactive! It can be difficult to find opportunities but the opportunities are there! Make the most of your time at university by searching for any experience you can because before you know it you will be graduating.
