Choosing a medical school course

You will need to choose which courses you will apply for quite early. In the UK system you can apply for FOUR courses via University and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). You can apply for a mix of four-year and five-year courses if you wish.

The deadline for UCAS applications is 15 October each year. This is earlier than the general degree deadline as all medical courses interview their candidates.

There are a range of factors to consider when making your decision about which medicine courses to apply for.

What do I need to do and when?

What you do and when in relation to your degree programme will depend on when you wish to begin studying medicine.

Example timeline: I wish to start medicine straight after completing my first three-year undergraduate degree

  1. Through year 2 (or penultimate year): Build relevant work experience (you can start earlier!)
  2. End of year 2 (June-Sept): Book your pre-entry tests
  3. June – Oct: Open day visits
  4. Sept – Nov of final year: Sit your pre-entry tests
  5. Sept of final year: Write your personal statement, arrange your reference
  6. 15 Oct: UCAS DEADLINE
  7. Nov – Mar of final year: Attend interviews
