Nikhil

Developer (Intern) at the University of Manchester

Give a quick snapshot of your role.

I work as a developer in the IT Applications Engineering Team within IT Services. My role is mostly linked to the technical delivery of the Finance Transformation Programme. As a developer on this project, I get involved with different integrations and CEMLI’s that need designing and building. Initially, I will support with the writing of technical design documentation which may involve coordinating with different teams. This will be followed by building of these integrations using a mixture of different technologies such as Oracle APEX.

What have you learned during your MGT?

I have picked up a lot of insight during this role and will learn more. The role is great, and I've developed a lot of knowledge and skills while carrying out my day-to-day duties.  One thing I like about the role is the exposure to other teams within IT Services I've been given, which allows me to widen my horizons. Spending time with other teams is good because not only do I learn about different technologies and processes in IT Services, but it helps me to figure out whether or not a certain area in IT Services is tailored to my ultimate career aspirations. Furthermore, attending integration business related workshops is beneficial since I learn how the technical side and business process associate with each other, and seeing the bigger picture helps to make things clearer when tackling an integration.

Why would you recommend MGT?

Everyone is different about their career plans: some people are steps ahead and have it all planned out, other people might have some idea but have some doubt still, and other people might simply have no clue. MGT roles are excellent as they support with the latter two. In my case, I was certain I wanted a career in IT/Computer Science and had some idea of the areas I enjoyed or wanted to learn more about. As mentioned above this MGT position has allowed and will continue to allow me to delve into other areas in IT Services and that clears my doubt about areas which I am not sure on. In addition, students often may not be ready to part ways with an educational environment and the MGT is a good solution to this as you are working towards your goal while remaining where you feel comfortable. Finally, if you are going for a MGT role, it is also a fantastic way to meet new people, widen your network, and make friends. Every conversation is important and could potentially lead to something better.

What are your future plans?

I am keen to remain in IT Services and The University of Manchester and am actively looking for vacancies appealing to me. I have enjoyed my MGT so far, I like working at the University of Manchester since it’s a diverse and supportive environment. There is a positive work culture at the University, the University is conscious about its staff’s wellbeing and offers different valuables such as learning & development. So, it would be fantastic to secure a permanent position in IT Services before my Fixed Term contract runs out.

Please summarise your MGT experience in three words:

Comfortable, developmental and connective.
