Public and Environmental Health

Those working in public and environmental health are responsible for encouraging people to stay healthy, protecting people from threats and ensuring people are able to live and work in a safe, hygienic environment.

Since April 2013 Public Health England and local authorities have taken the lead on this area rather than the NHS being solely responsible.

Job roles

Those working in public and environmental health can be employed in a number of different organisations. Some people are employed in private organisations such as consultancy firms, others in public institutions such as the NHS or government agencies and you may also find roles within charities.
