"Getting Started" means different things to different people. Whatever stage you’re at in the process of deciding what you want to do after graduation, these pages aim to assist you.

This diagram shows the four key elements of the career decision making process:

Depending on where you're up to in your thinking, you can join the process at whichever point is most relevant to you. Then move on to the next stage when you're ready.

For example:

  • those of you who have already made a firm decision about what career path to take (maybe you chose a vocational degree), may go straight into the taking action phase.
  • others who have no idea what to do after graduation, could start with the thinking about yourself section.

And there's a huge variety of scenarios in between!

Remember that making career decisions doesn't happen overnight.  You may change direction due to circumstances, factors beyond your control or your interests changing. For example:

  • work experience may confirm your career choice or change your mind about it!
  • learning more about the job market in your chosen field may make you re-assess your options.
  • what can matter at one stage of your life (for example location/desire to travel) may not be so important at other times and vice versa.
