This section aims to provide advice and guidance on some of the common issues faced by international students when writing CVs and covering letters, in particular on the use of the English language in making job applications.

We've used over 100 real international student CVs at The University of Manchester to compile the CV School and identify the common mistakes that international students can make when coming to grips with the challenges of an unfamiliar language and application culture.

You can use our downloadable guides to help with English and key phrases for job applications as well as the advice on the top mistakes to avoid. Then work through a CV makeover to see our advice in action on a real CV and covering letter.

Further help with CVs and applications

Detailed advice on CVs, covering letters and applications is available in the main applications and interviews section of the Careers Service website and should be used in addition to CV School for international students.

The Careers Service runs a range of talks and workshops for advice on CVs, covering letters and applications. We also offer group advice sessions at certain times of year specifically for international students who want to receive feedback on CVs and covering letters. Search CareersLink for upcoming group sessions and talks and workshops.

If you are in the process of making an application to a job/course, you are welcome to attend a Quick Query advice session to get feedback on your CV, CL or application form. Your Careers Service can check over the content, style and layout of your CV, but cannot provide spelling and grammar checks.
