Online Q and A

What is it?

New for 2012-13, Online Q & A will enable students to ask questions of a database of mentors, the vast majority of whom are graduates from The University of Manchester. It is intended for students who feel that the more enhanced level of support available through Manchester Gold Mentoring is not relevant to them, as they only wish to ask a brief question of an industry professional or are simply searching for general information about specific career areas/roles.

Mentors on this programme will not be in a position to provide feedback on CVs and applications, talent spot for their organisation, conduct mock interviews etc - their support will be more ad-hoc and they will not be able to form a mentoring relationship with you as an individual.

What can I ask?

Online Q & A is intended to support students in finding out more about different career areas, roles and organisations. Questions should be focused around issues relating to employability, career planning and exploring your future options after graduation.

Typical questions might include:

  • Do you know if your organisation accepts someone with a 2.2 degree?
  • What does your role involve?
  • What do you like most about working for your organisation?
  • What kind of work experience would be useful when applying for a job in your area?
  • How did you get on to the graduate scheme at your company?
  • Do I need to do a Masters to get into the same field as you?
  • What skills are most important for your job?

How does it work?

The Online Q & A system is now live.

You will be able to send two emails per month.

You will be able to search the mentor database via CareersLink, selecting the Mentor Search option. Once you find a mentor who you would like to ask a question, you can contact them through CareersLink.

Mentors will set a limit as to how many emails they are willing to receive each month and the system works on a first come, first served basis. The mentor will reply directly to the email address you provide but you will not see the mentors email when you originally contact them as your question will be sent via CareersLink.

Who can access it?

Any student at The University of Manchester is able to ask a question via Online Q&A.
