How much should I pay a graduate intern?

The average recommended salary for a graduate intern is between £14-15,000 pa/pro rata. However we would recommend that IT and Computer Science graduates be paid the market rate, ie, £18,000+ pa/pro rata. This is because of the current shortage of these skills.

When are graduates available to start internships?

Graduates are available to start work as soon as they graduate in late June or early July.  However graduates can be recruited through MGIP anytime from late June through to the following January/February.

I’m not based in Greater Manchester, can I still recruit an intern?

MGIP aims to retain graduate talent in the Greater Manchester City Region (this includes the ten Manchester boroughs plus Warrington and parts of Cheshire).

If you are outside this area you can still recruit a graduate from The University of Manchester through advertising on our CareersLink system.

How much does it cost?

The only cost involved is the graduate’s salary. There are no other associated costs, all support and assistance provided by the University throughout the recruitment process is free.

What help will I receive?

All companies and organisations recruiting through MGIP receive full administrative and recruitment support throughout the process, from advertising the opportunity through to dealing with the applicants and subsequent interview arranging.

Further support is provided to both the recruiter and the graduate for the duration of the internship.

What if I want to shorten or extend the internship?

If you would like to extend the graduate’s contract of employment beyond the initial internship period, and the graduate also wishes this, we would be happy to see this happen.

If the internship has to be curtailed for whatever reason, we would ask that the graduate receives the appropriate notice as indicated in their contract letter.

Does the University employ the graduate?

No. All graduates recruited through MGIP become employees of the company or organisation, just on a short-term contract. They therefore are subject to all the terms and conditions of employment of that particular company or organisation.

Are your graduates work ready?

The majority of graduates from The University of Manchester will have gained work experience prior to graduation. This can include administration work undertaken during their vacations as well as more in-depth work experience from undertaking a sandwich year in industry or spending a year abroad as part of their studies.

Other work experience can include bar work, volunteering, waitressing and so on. Additionally many of our graduates have had extra curricula responsibilities from running and participating in clubs and societies, charity work and leadership programmes.
