Part Time Job Vacancy - Careers Service CV & Applications Advisers

The University of Manchester Careers Service is looking to recruit a number of CV & Applications Advisers, working as part of a busy careers team to provide advice to students and graduates on their job application techniques.

This role is part-time, initially for the first semester with the possibility of extending into the second semester, with hours varying according to levels of demand from students. Each CV & Applications Adviser will work ideally at least two shifts of two hours per week (morning, lunchtime or afternoon) with any additional hours by agreement. The rate of pay will be £8 per hour.

The post would be particularly appropriate for a PhD student or someone who is similarly familiar with the undergraduate career search experience. Overall Purpose of the Job : 

To provide a CV and application advice service to students and graduates. This includes advice on covering letters and personal statements. The role would suit a Postgraduate student or someone with experience of undergraduate careers search.

Key Responsibilities, Accountabilities or Duties:   

Training and Support: 

Full training and support will be provided. An initial induction will include access to paper and web based resources, a number of interactive training session led by a Careers Consultant, and the opportunity to observe the work of Careers Consultants.

Each Applications Adviser will be linked to a member of careers staff who will act as a mentor. Mentors will observe the work of the Applications Advisers in the early days and will provide constructive feedback. Mentors will be available thereafter for on going support. Periodic observation will allow for continual development. Applications Advisers will observe the work of trained careers professionals offering CV and applications advice before having a go themselves. Applications Advisers must be observed for at least two sessions before working independently. Upon satisfactory completion of the training period Applications Advisers will begin to work independently providing one to one CV and applications advice to students and graduates at agreed times.

Training will begin in August. Dates for the above training sessions will be agreed following the interview. Selected Applications Advisers will be paid for the hours spent in training at a rate of £8 per hour.

Work Pattern

Hours of work may vary according to demand from the student body. We would like to initially offer the service with each Applications Adviser working at least two shifts of two hours per week with any additional hours by agreement.

Shifts will be morning, lunchtime or afternoon.

The rate of pay will be £8 per hour.

A rota will be agreed to commence at the end of September/beginning of October and run through to the Christmas Vacation.
