etutor (Teaching Assistant) Vacancies - Manchester Leadership Programme.
We are looking to recruit a number of postgraduate etutors (Teaching Assistants working primarily through Blackboard) to support the academic units of the Manchester Leadership Programme.
What is the Manchester Leadership Programme?
The MLP helps students understand the importance of leadership that promotes social, economic and environmental sustainability.
At the same time, it seeks to equip the 'leaders of tomorrow' with the skills and knowledge demanded by the leading organisations of today and the world of the future, including project management, communication skills and teamwork.
Students are also encouraged to develop social responsibility and enrich their university experience through a period of voluntary work.
The MLP comprises 2 elements:
- A Leadership in Action unit: accredited degree course units available for 10 and 20 credits (level 2).
- 60 hours volunteering activity, carried out over an academic year.
Leadership in Action units
The Leadership in Action units explore leadership within a variety of contexts, including:
- Leadership for the 21st-century
- Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
- Business ethics
- Social entrepreneurship
- Poverty, globalisation and environmental degradation
Most students take the lecture-based 10 credit unit, and etutors are required to attend the weekly lectures for those units, which are delivered by a range of academic and business leaders from within and beyond the university.
How will the Leadership In Action unit be delivered in 2008-9?
- A 10 credit, 1st semster Leadership in Action unit will take place on Tuesdays 4.00pm - 6.00pm, with 2 x 1 hour tutorials.
- A 10 credit, 2nd semester Leadership in Action unit will take place on Thursdays 3.00pm - 5.00pm, with 2 x 1 hour tutorials.
- A 20 credit Leadership in Action unit will take place comprising the 1st semester 10 credit unit followed by an independent research project in semester 2.
- An online 10 credit unit available in semester 2. This version of the unit is delivered via Blackboard and is highly interactive and innovative, using a blended approach including audio/video inputs and case studies from internal and external speakers.
We are initially looking for etutors for Semester 1, but are also interested in hearing from postgraduates interested in tutoring later units.
etutors - Your Role
You will be leading on-line discussion groups and responding to student queries through Blackboard discussion boards and e-mail for one of the Leadership In Action units. You will need to commit to regularly interacting with the students on-line, as well as attending face to face lectures for most units. There will be a number of face to face tutorials in all of the units, so you must be able to develop and deliver materials (with support from the MLP management team) directly to students.
You will also be involved in a significant amount of assessment, using innovative assessment techniques - for example students develop group eposters on a topic of their choosing, using linked PowerPoint slides to simulate a web presentation.
The overall time commitment averages out at 5 hours per week over the semester, for which you are paid at the standard Graduate Teaching Assistant rate (currently £13.41 per hour) - some weeks during the running of the unit, the time needed will be significantly less, though much more during peak assessment times.
etutors - What Are We Looking For?
Given the diverse topics which make up the Manchester Leadership Programme and the interdisciplinary nature of the programme, the etutor posts are open to current PhD students from a wide range of backgrounds. We do not expect you to have expertise in all of the areas covered.
We are however looking for a real personal interest in the subject matter and a passion for working with students. This is not like a conventional "lab demonstrator" role, and although that sort of experience is very valuable, you also need to convince us that you have something to offer related to the subject matter of the Manchester Leadership Programme - maybe your own volunteering experience, or any previous academic interest in these areas.
You will also need to be a skilled communicator, especially in writing.
What will you gain?
Our previous etutors have been a tremendous asset to the course, both supporting students and helping feed in to the development of the programme. In return, they have some fantastic experience which will enhance their CVs for both teaching and non-teaching roles in the future. As one of our etutors has said - "I've very much enjoyed the entire process and have become a real fan of the MLP course. I've told my friends and family about it and they are all really impressed by the overall focus."
