Hope: Student Marketing and Communications - Welcome Campaign Intern

Why did you choose to do an SEI?

I first saw the Welcome Campaign Intern role advertised and it looked like the ideal opportunity for me. The University of Manchester is a large organisation, which requires a lot of great people to work very hard to enable it to run successfully. The publications and communications produced by the University are really strong - I knew that I would be able to truly learn from the best people in the marketing field (which I did!).

Give a brief snapshot of your role:

My role was really varied which was great! I created, uploaded and edited content using the University's content management system. I took part in some production and filming work and got to project manage all the Welcome Week signage.

What were the most enjoyable aspects of your role?

I loved working on the designs for the Welcome Week signage, it was a creative and rewarding task.

Did you have any worries or concerns before your internship? Were these overcome and if so how?

I was really nervous before I started my internship about what my team would be like and if I was capable enough to successfully do the job. All my nerves and fears were eased when I started, I worked with an amazing team who were always so kind and helpful. Whilst there were learning points in my internship, I was able to do every task I was given. I think it's really key to be confident and believe in yourself, you are not expected to know everything!

What did you gain most from the role in terms of insights and skills?

My internship has given me a lot of confidence, I have learnt that I am capable of much more than I had originally thought! Project managing a job has taught me to really consider every detail and that communication is so important when working with a large number of people.

Do you have any words of wisdom for future interns?

My advice would be to enjoy it and don't worry if you come across something you can't do - everyone is happy to help. Ask lots of questions as this is how you learn.
