Why did you choose to do an SEI?

I chose to do an internship as I had no long-term career goals. I had no idea what type of work I wanted to do when I graduate. I thought an internship would be the perfect way to expose myself to a professional setting and to gain more understanding of the type of work that suits me. I’m really pleased I did my SEI, as just a month after finishing my role; I was offered a new job at the same organisation!

Give a brief snapshot of your role

  • Recruited, trained and co-ordinated volunteers into long-term and short-term roles, conducted background (DBS) checks and processing applications.
  • Liaised with other organisations and charities during Manchester Pride, attended meetings and scheduled timetables for over 200 volunteers and staff members and acted as a first port of call prior to, during and after the event.
  • Composed bi-weekly newsletters informing our existing volunteers of upcoming events and opportunities and encouraged participation and engagement from the wider community.

What were the most enjoyable aspects of your role?

Working during Manchester Pride for a charity heavily involved in the organisation of the event. It was hectic and challenging, but gave me a lot of insight into managing a large team of people and working to very tight deadlines. I also enjoyed having to think on my feet and problem solve at the same time as working towards long term goals. Meeting such a diverse group of people was also an amazing experience.

Did you have any worries or concerns before your internship? Were these overcome and if so how?

My main concern was that I wasn’t cut out for office-based work, having only gained experience in a retail setting. I was worried that my skill-set was restricted, but I instantly settled in – I developed new skills, adapted and strengthened my existing skills and gained so much confidence. Having my name on important pieces of work that were praised by other members of staff from within and outside of our organisation made me feel confident in my abilities.

What did you gain most from the role in terms of insights and skills?

Working for a charity gave me amazing insight into the incredible work they do and how they impact people’s lives. It also showed to me that I am suited to the type of work I was undertaking, and the type of people I was working with. An office-based job is very different to most typical student jobs, so the skills I gained will be more useful in future roles – for example, knowing how to communicate effectively with a range of people, from directors to volunteers.

Do you have any words of wisdom for future interns?

Go for it. Don’t hold back. You only get one chance to impress your employer and to develop your skills. Don’t let the early starts and late finishes make you lose sight of the reason you’re there. Push yourself as much as you possibly can, challenge yourself and take on tasks you’re afraid of. Above all, enjoy it!
