Student Immigration Intern at The University of Manchester

Give a quick snapshot of your role.

I work as the intern for the Student Immigration Team, within Division of Student Admissions and Administration. I am based in the Student Services Centre, working alongside those who work in fees, admissions, funding, academic support (exams and graduation) and student customer services. My role within the Student Immigration Team, though predominantly one of customer service, is extremely varied and my tasks change daily. As a summary, I give advice to and support international students in line with Home office regulations about Tier 4 visa’s. This involves both face to face and online interactions, and giving advice over the phone. During the week, the staff in Student Services work on a rota to supervise front counter duties and also answer phone calls that are directed to the main Student Services Centre phone line. As a result, I also have to answer queries in relation to other departments of the Student Services Centre from graduation to student bursaries.

Why did you choose MGT?

I chose MGT because I knew that I wanted to stay in Manchester after graduation, and working at the University was extremely appealing. It made the jump from student life to working life smooth, as I now work in an office that is adjacent to the buildings in which I had lectures. I had had a positive experience of University life and I wasn’t ready for it to end following the end of my third year. MGT provided a great opportunity for it to continue. I was attracted to the prospect of staying at such a great University, but now also gaining fantastic work experience. MGT provided constant support for CV guidance, job advertising and setting up interviews so that the adjustment into graduate life felt a lot easier.

How have you benefitted from your MGT?

I feel that I have benefitted from the vast array of skills I have learnt as part of my role, some that I wouldn’t have even considered as an undergraduate.

What advice would you give someone considering MGT?

I would say, to someone considering MGT, to go for it. There are so many roles that there is almost certainly going to be a role that appeals particularly to you, and even if you think it doesn’t you never know what you will end up enjoying. I would also advise to stay open minded, a job role that doesn’t necessarily sound extremely exciting, can also surprise you.

What are your plans for the future?

I plan to hopefully be able to continue to work at the University after my MGT, even if it is in another department. I also plan to undertake a Masters at some point in the future.
