Project Administrator, The University of Manchester Careers Service

Give a quick snapshot of your role.

I am an administrator for the University’s CareersLink system, approving contacts and vacancies. I am also conducting a project investigating the best way to present information from the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education Survey to current students.

Why did you choose MGT?

I previously worked in the University’s careers service as an Applications Advisor, and an MGT in the service presented me with an opportunity to broaden my knowledge and experience within such higher education environments. Taking an MGT has also allowed me to continue on as a Residential Life Advisor in University Halls of Residence for another year, further developing my experience of working within the University’s accommodation team.

How have you benefitted from your MGT?

It has given me the chance to really enhance my knowledge of working in higher education. I feel that at the end of the internship, I will be a far stronger candidate for similar roles both within the University of Manchester and at other institutions.

What advice would you give someone considering MGT?

Don’t go in blind. Make sure you research whatever role you are applying for properly and visit the Atrium Careers Service to at least have an informal chat with one of the interns there or have one of your applications checked over (nice little plug for my colleagues there!). It will really help you gain a better understanding of what such a role entails.

Be open to the internships that are on offer. There are a lot of roles included under the MGT banner, some of which you may have not originally considered that may open your eyes to an industry you could work within.

What are your plans for the future?

I have now secured another position at The University of Manchester itself!
